Things not to say at the Thanksgiving dinner table:

Paula = "You're not my real Mom, you're my adoptive Mom".

I can't even remember the context of the conversation cause it threw me for a loop.  Yes, she's being factual, but it HURT!  I was surprised with my reaction to it....a huge blow to the heart.

When I took Paula and Nic with me to return some movies....I brought to Paula's attention that I was hurt by her comment.  I don't think I was supposed to do that being the wiser parent and all, but I wanted to talk about it with them....explaining to them that I prefer they refer to their "real" Mom as the "Birth Mom".

Nic = "Mom, don't worry about it.  You are the only Mom that I know and love more than any toy in the world.  I mean....I don't even remember the lady who digested me."

Nic = "I know that she had to give us up because she didn't have enough materials to take care of us.....were we homeless?"

I don't think I will be as strong as I thought when they get older and want to find their REAL parents.
